"Genji Monogatari" (The Tale of Genji) Chapter 6, "Suetsumuhana". The name, Suetsumuhana, is the archaic Japanese word for safflower, and it is the name of a female character in "The Tale of Genji" who is a gifted koto player, whose skill and talent he admires. Her nose, however, does not appeal to the prince.


The work bears the artist's seal, "Masao."
