Object Description
Edo period color woodblock print with an image of a man crucified on a cross. Label on verso reads: "He entered into enemy castle as a spy, but was captured and crucified but continued to defend his master and spoke against his enemies til his last breath." - artist Nonin Ikkisai. In 1575 Horii Tsuneemon, a retainer of Okudaira Nobumatsu, escaped Nobumatsu's castle, which was being attacked by Takeda Katsuyori, in an attempt to get help from Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was captured and crucified, but until he died, he continued to declare loyalty to the shogun. Such courage in the 16th c. had inspired the shogitai at Ueno in 1868.
