Commentary
Old number: UCI no. 115.

"Mac McClain had worked as a teaching assistant to Richard Petterson at Scripps, where he had produced functional pottery; but soon after he arrived at Otis in March 1955, he began to destroy the symmetry of the wheel-thrown form. In Vase, 1957, for example, McClain flattened the vessel with a board and left the edge marks visible to expose both his process of working and the texture of the material because, he says, 'We were interested in the nature of clay itself.'"
