Commentary
"Often decorated with vivid and sparse patterns, the works [of Jun Kaneko] successfully meld traditional Japanese designs and bold 'pop art' splashes of color. The two early works in the Marer Collection, both dated 1971 and both entitled Plate [84.9.5 and 86.1.6], sport loosely rendered calligraphic and gestural decorations (a bird shape and the artist's hand, respectively) that are both confident and spirited. They rely on an organization of surface (and are successful because of it) that is usually associated with traditional Japanese decorative design."
