Commentary
Arita ware, Saga prefecture, Japan, Arita kilns This remarkable piece is usually large at 21 1/2 inches in diameter. It is also unusual due to its bold, hand-painted, striking painted design of a lion dog climbing up a peony bush. The leaves of the peony plant are very expressive, with each leaf loaded with contrasting cobalt pigments. The overall design has been adapted to the contour of the interior of the bowl in an imaginative, and truly beautiful manner. It is a unique masterpiece, with no other known similar pieces.
