Object Description
Set upon a red background created by crosshatching, horizontal blue, crosshatched stripes alternate with light gray, crosshatched stripes on the page. In the center, a high-contrast photographic image of an African American woman's face is depicted in black. The face appears askew, with each stripe carrying a portion of the portrait, so that the individual parts are not in line with those in the other stripes. At the top of the work, in black ink, are the words, "My country needs me, and if I were not here," and at the bottom, the phrase is completed with the words, "I would have to be invented." Next to the end of the quote, "Hortense Spillers" appears.
