Object Description
On a faded teal and sepia background, a wooden picket fence runs horizontally in the foreground. A break in the fence appears slightly off center. Four black soldiers in Civil War uniforms stand at that point, facing the viewer. The area around them appears to have been erased and rubbed, guiding the viewer's eye to the wooden barns and farm buildings, midground on the right. On a line to the far left, facing those buildings, is a wooden house. Between the house and the soldiers, a newspaper article, in an old fashioned typeface, exhorts, "Men of Color / To Arms! To Arms! / Now or Never / Three Years' Service! / Fail Now, & Our Race Is Doomed / Are Freemen Less Brave Than Slaves". The actual article is illegible.
