Commentary
This painting is attributed to Tang Di, with calligraphy with signature and seal of Zhao Mengfu.

This rare painting probably dates to the late 13th – early 14th. It is a grand landscape with figures in the foreground of a fisherman bringing his catch to his wife and child, who are coming to meet him. It is in ink on silk with slight colors. A poem has been inscribed onto the work.

Although the painting is unsigned, it is probably by the famous artist Tang Di (1287-1355). James Cahill, Professor at the University of California in 1980, published his opinion that the painting should be attributed to Tang Di. In 2014 Richard Barnhart , Professor Emeritus Yale University, wrote, “I am now quite confident that it was painted by Zhao Mengfu's disciple Tang Di. … . It would be Tang Di's earliest known work, closely related to “known” paintings of 1323 and 1334, and the only extant work by him with a physical connection to Zhao Mengfu. Many early texts suggest that Zhao helped the brilliant young Tang Di to grow as a painter, but now for the first time we have this proof.”

Of equal importance, Profesor Barnhart believes the poem was written by Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322), one of the greatest calligraphers in Chinese art history.

This painting is among the most important works in the Scripps College Collections, and a valuable example of 13th-14th century Yuan Dynasty painting.
Professor Bruce Coats, Scripps College
