On the work:

Inspired by childhood summer nights on the Aegean coast, Mary Schina uses the aesthetics of moonlit nights to express her artistic individuality. After digitally tweaking her photographs of the sea under a full moon, Schina paints a layer of aquatint to eliminate transition tones of gray. The deep blackness in aquatint isolates the contrast of bright, reflective light on a darkened sea. This contrast illuminates the decisive, competitive relationship of natural forces. In Sparkling Dark, XII, Schina’s artistic approach emphasizes the endless depths of the sea and the ranges of emerging light.
