Object Description
Though Blakelock no longer dated his work after the 1870s, Late April can be dated to the 1880s or 1890s because of its size and its composition of horizontal bands: an empty foreground, a screen of trees, and a distant horizon filled with glowing light. Like many of Blakelock's later paintings, Late April can be called a "skyscape" - the sky is the main subject and the contrast of the dark, spidery branches of the trees against the light provides the major interplay of form.
