Commentary

Kusunoki Masashige, a 14th-century samarai, remained loyal to the hopeless cause of Emperor Go-Daigo in his attempt to take rulership of Japan from the Kamakura shogunate and is remembered as the ideal of samurai loyalty. Here, he is saying farewell to his eleven-old son Masatsura and urging him to be courageous. Masashige's small force was overwhelmed. With the battle lost, he committed suicide in 1336.
