Egg tempera paint on wood panel, with gold leaf and bolé. Stipled and incised halos.

Object Description
Eastern Orthodox religious icon of the Virgin and child. The Madonna and child are placed against a gold background, with stipled gold halos above their heads. The Madonna is dressed in an ultramarine robe with emerald trim. A red gown shows through at her neck and sleeve areas. The child wears a pale orange shirt with a brown pattern. Both the faces and hands show modelling and heightened color around the cheeks and eyes. The child's hair is brown. The arched frame has a stipled pattern around the edge and is in gold leaf.
