Commentary
Restaurant Manlin at Shinagawa-cho District. Here, two courtesans, San and Onoyo of Honseki-cho are coming downstairs. A Western lady, a child and her attendant, all on horseback, can be seen outside through a large window of hexagonal glass panes. This is a type of Yokohama-e. Over a certain period of time, foreigners were restricted to the area around the harbor of Yokohama. Thereafter these prints have been called Yokohama prints or Yokohama-e (e means picture in Japanese).
