Commentary
A lovely, delicate style of flower painting associated with women painters and particularly with the 17th century artist Yun Bing, the daughter of the painter Yun Shouping, who also worked in a very refined and delicate style of flower painting. It might possibly be genuine, as it compares well with other extant examples of her work. Professor Kathleen Ryor, Carleton College
Peach blossoms and willow leaves are popular images for late spring in China, where these trees are often planted in gardens and along riverbank banks and lake shores to resond to the gentle breezes. In this painting on paper, the delicate pale green leaves are countered by the bold bright pinks and reds of the flowers.
The undated inscription provides the title and indicates that the artist was Yun Bing, daughter of the famous Qing Dynasty bird and flower painter Yun Shouping (1633-1690) who merged traditional Chinese flower painting methods with Western techniques of shading and naturalism. That mixture can be seen in the mossy contours of the highly stylized rock juxtaposed with the more realistically rendered peach buds and petals.
This rare work by a woman artist is important for documenting how European artistic styles were perceived and employed in China during the 17th-18th centuries.
Professor Bruce Coats, Scripps College
