Object Description
Shepherds Piping is one of many small landscape studies Vedder produced. Showing his debt to the Macchiaioli (young Italian landscape painters working in Florence), it captures the flat patterns of color and light on the Italian hills, their forms accentuated by sharp contrasts between sun and shadow. Sheperds Piping is clearly inspired by the open spaces and hills of Umbria and Tuscany, while the two figures, evoking mythical and pastoral themes, are products of the artist's imagination.
