Commentary
Dong Gao was the son of the prominent Qing dynasty scholar-official and painter Dong Bangda (1699-1769, jinshi 1733). Like his father, Dong Gao was a jinshi degree holder (1763) who served as an official, rising to the rank of Grand Secretary.

Signed Dong Gao. The large, red ink Imperial seal at the right is Jiaqing (1796-1820). Signature indicates that it was painted for the court. There is a large red seal in the upper center. Three small red ink seals (two square and one round) are in the lower right corner. Rectangular red ink seal in the lower left corner. Red rectangular seal stamped above this, on a rock. Signature with two red seals above the rock.

Medium
Brown ink wash, black ink, and white paint brushed on silk. Before conservation: cornflower blue and ivory silk brocade mounting. After conservation: white donsu silk with sayagataenjumon pattern. Rosewood end knobs.

Object Description
Large hanging scroll of a snow scene, with two male figures in blue robes riding donkeys across a bridge in the lower right. The vast landscape includes rocky mountains and snow covered trees. There are numerous small waterfalls among the mountains.
