Object Description
Two women have been enjoying the cherry blossoms, for which Mukojima was famous, and one lady now rests on a red felt covered seat. The Meiji author Nagai Kafu thought highly of the area: "They who make the count of famous places of Tokyo cannot but put a pair of scenic spots, Ueno and Mukojima, at the head of their lists." The inset depicts the Hirajima Shinto shrine building at right with an enormous bronze lantern, and a statue of an ox at left with various ribbons and prayer plaques around its neck. The Mukojima area had many temples and shrines; this one might be dedicated to Kitano Tenjin, whose vehicle is an ox. For more information, please refer to the Chikanobu exhibition catalogue.
