Object Description
The kabuki play "The Precious Incense and Autumn Flowers of Sendai" (Meiboku Sendai hagi; see also 2003.1.52) is based on actual events in the northern city of Sendai where various assassination plots were uncovered to overthrow the Date family. Here the young Date heir is protected by his nursemaid during a scuffle in the Bamboo Chamber (Takenoma). Inset: Arajishi Otokonosuke, a loyal retainer of the Date family, defending the mansion.
