Object Description
Engraving by J. Kirk from an original sketch created for the book Homes of American Authors, published in 1853 by G.P. Putnam & Co., New York. Shown here is the Pepperell, Mass. house of Wiliam Hickling Prescott (1796-1859), American historian noted for his books The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic and for The History of the Conquest of Mexico. As one of three Prescott residences, Pepperell was the family's autumn retreat. From Homes of American Authors:
"It is a fine rolling country; and the house stands on a rising ground that descends with a gentle sweep to the Nissitisset, a clear and very pretty river, affording picturesque views in its winding course. A bold mountain chain on the northwest...makes a dark frame to the picture. The land is well studded with trees- oak, walnut, chestnut, and maple- distributed in clumps and avenues, so as to produce an excellent effect."
