Object Description
"Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s tryptich portrays Kabuki actor Ichikawa Sadanji (1842-1904) in the role of the chivalrous former samurai Gosho no Gorozo. Based on a novel by Ryutei Tanehiko and first performed in 1864, the image depicts the former samurai in his quest to seek revenge on a past patron by assassinating his former master’s mistress. In the scene, Gorozo sweeps his sword at a flying bird, missing it and accidentally cutting off a blossoming cherry tree branch." (DR, student in 2010 seminar ARHI154 Japanese Prints)
