Object Description
From the series "One Hundred Kabuki Roles of Ichikawa Danjuro" (J. Ichikawa Danjuro engei hyakuban). The kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX is shown here in the role of Priest Mongaku, a character from The Tale of the Heike. Born as Endo Musha Morito, he experienced a religious awakening at the age of nineteen and became a particularly ascetic monk. He encouraged Minamoto no Yoritomo to lead the revolt against the Taira.
