Object Description
The serene figure of the White Robed Kannon, is a popular figure in Japanese/Buddhist art, and is the most popular of the 33 representations of the Bosatsu of Compassion. The Kannon bosatsu (bodhisattva) of compassion stands on a large lotus pedestal and is flanked by two other bosatsus, Nikko the bodhisattva of moonlight (Left), and Gakko the bodhisattva of sunlight (Right). Both have their own lotuses upon which they sit, attending to the Kannon. The figures are backed by an intricately incised carved ivory mandrola, with exquisite decorative detail. The White Kannon wears an ornate headdress, signifying her power and status in the heavens. This seemingly distant quality is neutralized by the lotus held in her right hand, which signifies her unlimited compassion and desire to help all individuals towards the goal of nirvana. Her left hand is positioned with the fingers pointed downward and palm forward, in a mudra of welcome.
