A seal mark cast into the base identifies this piece as "Toriyama Saku" (Made by Saku).

Object Description
Japanese bronze figure of "Bishamon-ten", the "Keeper of the North", with champlevé enamel decorations and a stone base. The figure held a now missing pagoda in each hand, with both arms bent at the elbow and the right forearm raised. The garments are executed in multicolored enamels against white and turquoise fields. The stylized "t'ao-t'ieh" mask decorations are noteworthy. This figure is quite similar to guardian sculptures in polychromed clay that stand in the Todaiji Temple in Nara, Japan.
