Commentary
Amida, the Buddha of the Western Paradise, vowed that all who sincerely believed in him and called out his name in prayer would enter into the Pure Land on their deaths. This blissful realm is where worshippers can more intensely seek spiritual enlightenment. Amida's attendants are bodhisattvas who have already attained enlightenment but have chosen to stay in this world to help sentient beings find salvation. Kannon, the embodiment of Amida's mercy, holds a lotus pedestal to receive the spirit of the deceased and Seishi, representing Amida's wisdom, has his hands together in prayer. They are standing on clouds, indicating that they are descending from the Pure Land to welcome a true believer. - Bruce A. Coats, 2022

Object Description
Statuette of Buddha, with two disciples, on a lotus base. The figures are backed by an almond-shaped plate, which is gilded, and has an intricate design carved into it. One disciple holds a patra, and the other has his hands in the namaskara mudra. The Buddha has hands positioned in vitarka mudra. The figures wear black painted robes with painted gold designs. There are spirals carved in the wooden base beneath the figures, as if clouds were beneath their feet.
