hand-colored albumen print
One of a small number of vertical compositions in the album, this work depicts two men, one kneeling on the left, the other standing at the right. Both wear traditional Japanese garments. The man on the left reads from a small book. His hair is shorn very short and he seems to be quite young. The man on the right holds his hands together and just below the chin, as if in prayer. He is older than the other figure, and his head is completely shorn of hair. He wears a highly decorated cape over his clothing. The cape is red, covered with golden flowers and leaves, in contrast to the more somber clothing of the younger man.
