Commentary
"Leach's stoneware Bottle, 1956, utilizes a traditional Japanese form, the square, small-mouthed bottle with rim...The spontaneous, calligraphic design recalls Leach's interest in Zen Buddhism, a spiritual discipline pervasive in Japan that is reflected in traditional pottery. The Zen aesthetic reveres irregularity, asymmetry, simplicity, and austerity in design." (Kay Koeninger, Revolution in Clay, 1994, pg. 22)
