Don Bachardy, Santa Monica, CA, 1984
Gelatin silver print on paper
16 x 20 in. (41 x 51 cm)
Santa Monica-based portrait artist Don Bachardy (1934–) was born and raised in Los Angeles, and like fellow artist, Chuck Arnoldi, trained at the California Institute of Arts. Bachardy met author Christopher Isherwood at the age of 18 and would remain his life partner until Isherwood’s death. This significant relationship led to Bachardy’s many drawings and paintings of Isherwood, and Bachardy in turn influenced Isherwood’s work. Bachardy is seen here in his studio, surrounded by his portraits. A painting of Christopher Isherwood can be seen on the bottom, second from left.
