Commentary
This photograph, like the neighboring shot, is part of Michael Childers’ 1976 series of Andy Warhol in his Union Square studio. Childers climbed on top of a ladder to achieve the photograph’s unique angle, with Warhol reclining directly below him enveloped in a rich fur coat. The coat was not Warhol’s own, but one another companion had been wearing that day. Smitten with the garment, Warhol asked to borrow it. Captured by Childers within its luxurious folds, Warhol’s signature blonde hair is framed by the hood of the coat as he stares just beyond the camera.
