Object Description
On a faded teal and sepia background, a wooden picket fence runs horizontally across the foreground. The light-colored fence is streaked and patched with red. Five figures stand in the center of the work, in front of the fence, facing the viewer. Two are black soldiers dressed in Civil War uniforms. The other three are faded to the point of the viewer being unable to distinguish the details of their dress or race. The fence is visible through the three ghostly silhouettes. Behind the fence, numerous simplified, masculine figures are depicted. They appear to be outdoors. On the far left, one man bows to another, who stands stiffly upright. Above the soldiers, in the center of the print, a newspaper headline, in an old fashioned typeface, exhorts, "Our Last Opportunity Has Come! / Men of Color, Brothers and Fathers/ We Appeal to You!". The actual article is illegible.
