Object Description
The subject of this portrait, a slender African American man, pulls the viewer in with the directness of his gaze. Yet his eyes are for the most part in shadow as his face, perhaps due to the wide brimmed hat he wears. The viewer sees the subject only from the chest upward, with his arms crossed over his chest, draped with quilts of extravagent colors and patterns. Quilts constitute the whole of what little background is revealed, and that background is mainly in shades of pink with black lines delineating the patterns and folds of the quilts. The swathing of the quilts creates the effect of the viewer no longer being aware of at what point the quilts begin and the subject's clothing ends.
