Object Description
Oto no miya Morinaga (1308-1335) was the third son of Emperor GoDaigo (1288-1339) and closely involved with his father’s efforts to restore political power to the imperial family. However, when Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358) decided to claim the position of shogun, Prince Morinaga was captured and put under house arrest in a cave near Kamakura. Ashikaga Tadayoshi (1306-1352) was put in charge of the prince, but when the local Hojo troops rebelled against the Ashikaga, Tadayoshi was forced to flee and beheaded Prince Morinaga rather than risk having him taken by the Hojo.
