Object Description
Edo period color woodblock triptych print with an image of the Emperor, seated, in the center, and men on each side of him, bowing. Emperor Sutoku, the 75th sovereign reigning 1123-1142, conspired with the Minister of the Left Fujiwara no Yorinaga and others to overthrow his half-brother, Emperor Go-Shirakawa. Failing in his attempt he was exiled to Sanuki Province (now Kagawa Prefecture) where he died. In this print, he rejects the Priest Ennyo who comes to see him in exile.
