Commentary
Probably the center of a triptych. Not a back to back print.

On mat, in pencil: Chikanobu Meiji 1867 Emperor and Empress, Chi Ba4. Seals: upper right, upper left, upper center, lower left, lower center, and lower right. Carver: Hori Gin. Signed Toyohara Kunichika hitsu.

Object Description
Kabuki actor Bando Hikosaburo V (1832-1877) in the role of Kinshojo in the play The Battles of Coxinga (Kokusenya kassen). The inset upper panel is a street scene of Tokyo in the Yokohama-e style of Hiroshige III (1843-1894). The street scene includes both traditional wooden shop buildings and new "fireproof" brick stores in the Western style, along with a rickshaw (a new form of transportation).
