Object Description
The warrior Sato Tadanobu (1161-1186) helped Minamoto Yoshitsune escape from the snowy mountains of Yoshino by donning his friend's armor and fighting off soldier-monks intent on capturing Yoshitsune. Later Tadanobu secretly returned to Kyoto and stopped at the brothel where his beloved Okuruma was employed. However, after he fell asleep, she decided to betray him, and went to tell authorities (shown here). Tadanobu was able to escape that night, using a chess (go) board as his weapon, but the next day after a fierce fight, he committed suicide. Inset: Tadanobu doing battle at a Yoshino temple.
