Commentary
Susan Hertel studied at Scripps College under Millard Sheets and served as his artistic assistant for 26 years. She was a lover of animals, owning Arabian horses, Nubian goats, chickens, cats, and dogs. Her pets often populated her paintings. Massive swaths of color show Sheets’s influence, but also reveal the influence of fauvist Henri Matisse. That the fauvists were named after the French word for “wild beast” is fitting, given Hertel’s adoration of animals, both wild and tame. David Kuhio Ahia, PO ’18
