Object Description
Image of a mother wrapping her child in a towel; blocky figures. Jean Charlot, lithographer, muralist and painter, was born in Paris at the turn of the century. By his early twenties, Charlot was living in Mexico. He became fascinated by the mural renaissance that swept the country and soon was employed by the Mexican government to paint murals on the walls of public buildings in Mexico City. Charlot left Mexico in 1928 for New York where he taught at the Art Students League and lectured at Columbia University.
Mother and Child, is one of several paintings that touched on themes of labor in Mexico, focusing on daily tasks, such as; cooking, washing and cleaning.
