Object Description
In the sixth print of this series, Chikanobu has inverted the filial piety narratives: Cui Nanshan’s young wife Lady Tang (To Fujin) willingly suckles her husband’s great grandmother, who has no teeth, but in the Japanese scene, a mother attracts her baby son to come nurse. The settings are similar with a porch open to the garden, and in both images a third person, a young girl, observes how her mother willing offers breast milk to those who need it. Thus the moral has changed from merely taking care of the elderly to caring for one’s entire family.
