Ichikawa Danjuro II with Sanogawa Mangiku
Reproduction of a design by Torii Kiyotada, c. 1719

The pillows and piled bedding suggest the scene takes place in a brothel, and the actor Sanogawa Mangiku (c. 1690-1747) plays a courtesan who is refereeing a match between her customers. She holds a fan / gunbai above some money on a tray. Ichikawa Danjuro II (1688-1758) is on the right, and this may depict the drama “Love Suicides at Sonezaki / Sonezaki Shinju performed in Edo April 1719, in which case Danjuro II plays the merchant Tokubei, and Mangiku is his beloved.
