Object Description
Horizontal color woodblock print depicting a scene from the kabuki play, Seinan Yume Monogatari (Tale of Seinan Dream). Kabuki actor Jitsukawa Enjaku is in the role of General Saijo in the Battle of Seinan. Arashi Rikan is in the role of Sonoe.

In 1877, Saigo Takamori led the Satsuma Rebellion against the Meiji government. Eventually resulting in an imperial victory, the rebellion provided ample fodder for kabuki plays. Though contemporary events and figures were prohibited subject matters, theatres skirted those restrictions by making minor changes to characters' names and events.
