Commentary
While this image originated during the Edo period, the print displayed here was a recarved edition, created during the 1930s. The paper is sand colored.

The subject is the Kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo, in "Roko." The actor was also known as "Roko." He was a much celebrated "onnagata," a specialist in female roles. Here, he plays one such role.

Torii Kiyomitsu was born in 1735 as the son of Kiyonobu II. A prominent artist, he was well known for his refined "hashira-e" (long format) bijin prints. (artelino.com)
