Commentary
The Illustrations for the novel "The Water Margin", c. 1863:  Yoshitoshi's teacher in printmaking Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) was noted for his book illustrations of the Chinese epic "The Water Margin."  Here Yoshitoshi continues the dense dramatic compositions of his mentor, depicting brave warriors defeating real and fantastic foes.
