Object Description
Image of the thirties actress Ruth St. Denis in character. In an attempt to accurately represent ancient Egyptian culture, St. Denis did a great deal of research using whatever texts and photographs she could find. She was inspired by photographs of ancient wall drawings, and tried to replicate the costumes and movements of the dancers when designing the farmers, peasants, priestesses, and religious deities featured in "Egypta." The dance choreography was also derived from pictographs, employing stiff movements and angular poses with rigidly pointed hands and arms.
