Commentary
Mike Disfarmer (1884-1959) was born to German immigrants in Arkansas, where he later established his own studio. He was fascinated with natural lighting, and would often take over an hour for each portrait sitting in order to make proper adjustments. Despite Disfarmer’s particularities, his studio was a town attraction, and his “penny portraits” (25-50 cents an image) were popular, affordable mementos. Allegra Cox, SCR 2018
