Commentary
Freed traveled to the Netherlands in 1958, settling in Amsterdam in order to chronicle its burgeoning Jewish community. The smaller city of Haarlem, just over 20 miles to the west, was not as significant a hub for Dutch Jews; however, it was still an attractive locale for Freed’s sampling of local life. Visually, many of the threads seen in Freed’s "Hassidic boys in street, Israel" (1967) (2013.26.33) echo this earlier photo, perhaps an ancestor of sorts; this is particularly true of the composition taken up by a winding central street, and the children stationed in the bottom left quadrant of the image.
