Commentary
Two teddy bears accompanied by tiny bows and wilted flowers hang on a fence shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Freed primarily tackled issues of social injustice, and the grief that galvanized New York following the World Trade Center’s destruction was inescapable. A photograph of one of the deceased, pinned to the bear at right, carries a solemn tribute: “We will always keep you in our hearts…”

Liam Machado, University of La Verne
