Commentary
Heavy chains and ropes cut a sharp line across the image, creating a strong sense of movement for the viewer. The men on the ramp follow this line, hardly more than silhouettes against the bright sky as they push the car up the ship’s ramp. Oddly synchronized, the men are frozen in the frame - they could be in the middle of a dance move if not for their heavy chore. Chairs, blankets, a mattress, and other items are stacked precariously on top of the car, which takes on its own personality in this shot. Unnoticed by the others, a man, presumably a guard, watches the process from farther up the ramp. Moments like this are common in Freed’s photography: instances of humor in everyday occasions.
