Typed description on photo:

Holland 1964
Frozen canals encircle a sportpark in the newly build [sic] living quarters of Amsterdam-West. The windmill remained on the former farmland. Some of these windmills can be rented for 1 hfl. (25 US cents) per month, to live in and take care on [sic] them. Mostly young architects are doing this.

"The content of Ice Skater is lighter than many of Freed’s social commentaries, portraying a carefree moment on the frozen canals of Amsterdam. Freed travelled to Amsterdam to photograph Jewish communities there; this photo may have been taken on one such trip. The blowing grasses take up the majority of the foreground, and their size and crisp detail make them seem as if they are caressing the face of the viewer. The grasses blowing in the wind, the curve of the river, and the tilt of the windmill create a flowing sense of movement throughout the image, mimicking the movement of the skater."
