Commentary
Larry Fink is uninterested in the grand spectacle unfolding around him. If there is a major choreographed event at the party in this New York club, that is not what he captures. Glamorous parties take shape; however, here, he is drawn to the introspective moments of his subjects. The suspended gestures and preoccupied expressions offer the viewer transparency into the lives of the seemingly carefree upper class. The polished brunette in Club Cornich, New York City averts her eyes. The subject is illuminated, the flash of the camera reflects behind her as she coyly turns her head from Fink. Her sense of insecurity begs the question, what personal indiscretions or societal truths lay behind this confident facade? Her cropped friend smiles widely, engaged in whatever exists outside the photographer’s frame.
