This work is one of 50 hand-colored albumen prints of protraits and scenes of Japanese life.

Content : Gilt-edge leaves are tabbed into album with lacquer boards and leather spine, with the title, "Japan," in gold. Front cover has hand-painted and inlaid scene of a man pulling a rickshaw in which a woman with an umbrella is seated. Both wear traditional garb. Inlays are of ivory. Back cover is painted with the images of a dragonfly, cricket, praying mantis, butterfly and another winged insect, possibly a bee. End papers and doublure are of imitation moire.

In the lower right hand corner, the number 64 appears with the title.

In this photo, two young women, or girls, work at weaving silk. The piece is dominated visually by the wooden loom itself, which is operated by the young woman seated at the loom to the right, while the other young woman stands at the left, hand resting on the machine, observing. Both women are dressed in traditional Japanese garments and their hair is up in a bun. Decorative screens create the space the women occupy. A spinning wheel is to the right, foreground. Interestingly enough, behind the screens, there is a tree. It appears that this is taking place outdoors.
