Commentary
This print was made in 2003.

Baltermants was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1912. He served as a photographer during the Great Patriotic War (The Great Patriotic War, from 1941-1945, is the Russian term for the conflict along the Eastern Fronts of WWII between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany). Publication of images was controlled in accordance with Soviet propaganda, so it wasn’t until the Cold War that Baltermants was able to publicize the remainder of his work. Forward is an example of one of his more patriotic shots: arm raised, the soldier on the far right urges his peers onward into the fray; another soldier runs past Baltermants, intent on joining his comrades. Barely visible in the smoke, other soldiers can be seen pressing on. Created to be viewed by civilians, Forward is an inspiring image, showcasing the bravery and resolution of Soviet soldiers.
